Monday’s Ducks: Get Beyond Lining Them Up
Mondays are great because after a restful Sunday I tend to feel ready to tweak what I did last week into something more to the point this week. I used to spend a lot of time getting my ducks all in a row, treating everything big I wanted to do as something requiring much preparation and laying of groundwork.
The biggest problem with getting all the ducks in a row in life is that it can end up becoming one’s life–lining up the ducks. Life ducks are not toy ducks–they were never designed for your ease of use or entertainment. Next thing you know, years have whizzed by and there’s still some stubborn ducks not getting or staying in line, and they are still keeping you from accomplishing anything fun.
This is where we need to walk away from both the metaphor and the fruitless activity. Instead of lining up external elements (job, house, savings, promotion, retirement, whatever), it’s quicker, surer, and simpler to line up elements of one’s thinking. If you just go ahead and start to think like a minimalist, you don’t have to wait until you’ve thrown out everything or for your spouse to get on board to actually live like a minimalist. You don’t need spare time or money for classes to start breathing mindfully and meditating. The whole point of getting to live like you want to live is to just go ahead and live it. Cut through the crap. Lose the ducks already.
Other and far better bloggers have laid out guidelines to simplify, to minimalize, to succeed. I have been following them and they are among the list in my blogroll. Christianna’s popular post “3 Steps for Dealing with Subliminal Clutter” is a recent entry on the subject of mental clutter. Mental clutter not only gets in the way of living life the way you want, it can get in the way of successfully moving beyond the duck game.
