Courtney Carver’s Simple Ways to Be More With Less
Simple Ways to Be More With Less, by Courtney Carver, has just come out and it’s a lovely book, the kind that you keep at hand to reread in those moments when you look for soothing support and encouragement. Her thesis:
“Your choices and actions will determine how you live, regardless of your current circumstances.”
Just as in her blog Be More With Less, Courtney keeps things simple and light, but not simplistic. She provides 27 ideas and ways to make those choices and take those actions to realize a better life. Some are as simple as starting the day with a glass of water–sipping it and doing absolutely nothing else in the meantime. Other ideas are more complex and philosophical: “The ironic part is that while your parents were killing your dreams, they only wanted the best for you.” Her approach is truly holistic, covering every way we have of being in the world, from health to work to money to relationships, and both the physical and internal world.
Along with her own gentle advice, she has included excellent essays from six well-known contributors: Leo Babauta, Joshua Becker, Everett Bogue, Dan Goodwin, Jonathan Mead, and Tammy Strobel.
My favorite section is by Dan Goodwin on More Creativity, but of course as an artist I’m especially open to writings on the creative process. He turns the idea of complete creative freedom on its head: “Ironically, when we’re free to create absolutely anything, we more often than not end up creating absolutely nothing.” My own experiences have proven this to be correct, but he has a way of putting it that makes the light bulb go on in my head.
Simple Ways to Be More with Less will…
- improve your health
- make you smile
- slow you down
- remind you about what is important
This is a book that would make a wonderful gift, one of those little books with simple, actionable ideas that you can reread at any point, as a sort of mindfulness exercise. It’s a gentle, graceful book throughout, and I don’t recall the word “awesome!” anyplace, or any other hyperboles. The layout is likewise soft and pleasant to look at, making reading a meditative experience. Simple Ways to Be More With Less is available as a PDF download for $9.95 and I am proud to be an affiliate.
