I love making time for outings! We’re off to the Maker Faire this Saturday to glean inspiration from all the newly invented exhibits. Living with artists and creators is a constant source of fascination and discovery. Then hello Alcatraz on Sunday, a first visit for my son who, somehow, has been fascinated with jail cells for a while.

My kids do help out with stuff, but in general they still need help when they are “helping out” with stuff – you know, as I write this I realize that the problem here is my lack of patience and wanting perfection rather than any flaw on their part!

Hi Terra–well, I think kids can help out with stuff, but I had only one child, and a male at that. When he was young, he had a bit of “looking after Mom” in him after his father and I divorced, so that helped, too. Now he’s 30 and married and a homeowner himself and takes this kind of thing in stride. I have no idea what two little girls will or won’t do! I hope the Queen will mellow a bit so you all can have those little adventures again.

Hi Willow–I was considering an elliptical, too. The reviews for the ones I could afford, however, suggested that they were “clanky” and not very stable. It seemed I could get a better quality machine for the money by sticking to a treadmill.

The weather turned out to be a miracle for our day trip–I’ve never seen Lake Michigan so calm around the Michigan City Lighthouse before. The weather was truly the highlight of the day.

Hi Miss Robin–my son was taller than me (and I’m tall)from about age 12. He was usually a good sport about things when he was a kid, although I am sure he also thought there was a conspiracy to mold him into my personal butler at times :}

The short-drive breaks seem to be the most realistic way to see something different than one’s neighborhood over and over and over again!

If I read you correctly, Meg, you are saying there will come a point in Motherhood where my children might actually help me? Be still, my beating heart! I shall await the day with baited breath, even though it means that I will be too inflexible, short, round, or muddled to do myself whatever it is they will be helping with!

I have always loved peonies, what a lovely flower to have spreading out over Tabby.

We used to roam more before no. 2, the changeling, was born. She is our choleric Queen, and her disgruntled subjects are too tired to stage an uprising. We still venture out, but the trips are more structured and shorter. I miss the sense of quiet excitement starting out an new adventure.

And congrats on the mortgage – that’s got to be a relief!

Our summer plans are like yours. We plan an outing, pack a lunch. Usually, it’s to a garden or a hiking or biking trail.
It’s good to hear a positive update on the tread mill. I never used my elliptical machine, finally sold it. I’m thinking a treadmill might be a good option for winter when it’s harder to walk.

Congratulations on the refinance. How wonderful for you!

I’m so sorry about your cat. Wish I could give you ours; I’m ready to not be a pet owner any more. Too bad the kids love them so much.

My son’s name is Nik as well. I frequently call him into the kitchen to “be tall” for me when I can’t reach things. He’ll be sixteen this year, so I get him full-time for a few more years.

I’m glad the treadmill is working out. I hate wating for rubber smell to wear off. It gives me a headache.

I hope you had a great time on your outing. You’ve inspired me — I think I’ll take a drive up the canyon. Nothing like spending some time in the mountains to refresh me and bring me peace.
